Mental Health Resources

The last thing the staff of Desert Skies want to see is someone showing up at the station before it was their time.

As someone who’s lived with bipolar disorder since his late teens, I know how hard it can be to take the steps to get help. There’s so much shame, stigma, and in some cases, ridiculously difficult healthcare barriers keeping one from access to help.

But one thing I can tell you, is that it can get better. It got better for me. I know it can get better for you.

Here’s a couple resources I pulled together that I truly believe in, and sorry that’s it’s only for the U.S. This is where I know the most about. Feel free to email me at attendant@desertskiesfuel.com with resources specific to your part of the world, and I can add them here.

NAMI
NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness. They’re a grassroots organization that I volunteer with. NAMI works to educate, support, advocate, listen and lead to improve the lives of people with mental illness and their loved ones. There’s many different resources on their website and they have a helpline.

The helpline is available Monday through Friday, 10 A.M. – 10 P.M. ET.
Call 1-800-950-NAMI (6264), text “HelpLine” to 62640 or email them at helpline@nami.org

There’s also a hotline specific to teens and young adults
Call 1-800-950-6264, chat, text “Friend” to 62640, or email helpline@nami.org to connect with them.

Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
An amazing resource for when you’re in a state of crisis or considering taking your own life. Available 24 hours a day. You can call or text 988, and you’ll be connected with someone whose there to provide free and confidential emotional support. A cool thing is this connects you to your local crisis line, so you’re not speaking with someone on the other side of the country.

That lifeline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just call or text 988
